Proven Home Generator & Electrical Service in Hickory, NC

Oakwood's Queen Anne and Craftsman houses went up between the 1880s and the 1930s, when wiring meant a few lamps. Across Hickory, rooms like those now run heat pumps and EV chargers, and Hurricane Helene showed how long the lights can stay off.

A furniture town's houses, wired for another century

Hickory grew on wagon shops, two crossing railroads and the furniture plants that followed, and its streets still show each layer. Oakwood's homes date from the 1880s to the 1930s, Kenworth's mostly from the early and mid-20th century, and the Claremont district counts 172 contributing buildings from about 1875 to 1950. Many of those houses were never meant to carry central air, a car on a charger and a standby generator at once. We reach them by driving US 321, the highway that runs south from Hickory straight to the shop behind our generator and electrical service in Gastonia, where Roland Black has worked since 1973.

What Catawba County storms and old wiring ask of a Hickory home

Hickory sits well inland, but its record shows hurricanes, a grid emergency and a lot of early 20th century housing all landing on the same streets.

  1. Helene's long week

The City of Hickory declared a state of emergency at 10 a.m. on September 26, 2024, as Hurricane Helene arrived. By that Sunday morning, about 19,000 Catawba County customers were still without power, and many had no estimate for restoration.

  2. Hugo's 81 mph gusts

Hurricane Hugo reached Hickory on September 22, 1989, with wind gusts measured at 81 mph. In Catawba County its damage was described as worse than the EF-4 tornado that had struck that May.

  3. A Christmas Eve the grid ran short

Christmas Eve 2022 brought something new: with Winter Storm Elliott straining supply, Duke Energy cut power to roughly 500,000 customers in planned rotations, a first for the company. Duke serves Hickory, so a hard freeze can cut power even when no ice touches the lines.

  4. Historic districts on early service

Oakwood's houses date from the 1880s to the 1930s, and Kenworth's were built mostly in the early and mid-20th century. Homes of that age were wired for lighting, so a charger, heat pump or generator waits on a load calculation.

Questions from Hickory homeowners

Catawba County Building Services. The county handles building inspections for the City of Hickory and also inspects for Conover, Newton, Maiden and the other Catawba County towns. We pull the electrical permit and schedule both the rough-in and final inspections with the county.

Duke Energy. Hickory is not on the ElectriCities list of public power towns, so Duke owns the lines and handles restoration after storms like Helene. A standby generator works on your side of the meter: its transfer switch disconnects the house from Duke's lines, starts the unit and hands the circuits back once grid power returns.

Usually, once the service is checked. These districts hold homes built from the 1870s through 1950, and some have been rewired and upgraded while others still run close to their original capacity. We calculate the load on your panel before quoting, then tell you whether a load management device or a full panel upgrade is the better route.

Hickory's own history says inland is not out of reach. Hugo brought 81 mph gusts in 1989, Helene left about 19,000 Catawba County customers dark three days after the emergency declaration in 2024, and Duke's 2022 rotating outages came from cold, not wind. We size a generator to the circuits you cannot go without and quote it free.
